Microsoft ends support for Windows 7

At its release on October 22, 2009, Microsoft made a commitment to provide 10 years of product support for Windows 7. Once this 10-year period is over, Microsoft will discontinue support for Windows 7 so we can focus our investment on supporting new technologies and great new experiences. The definitive conclusion of Windows 7 service day will be January 14, 2020. Afterwards, the company will no longer be available for the technical assistance and software updates from Windows Update that help protect your PC. It is therefore important that you upgrade to a modern operating system like Windows 10 which can provide the latest security updates to help keep you and your data safe. Additionally, customer service from Microsoft will no longer be available to provide technical support for Windows 7. Over time, related Windows 7 services will also be discontinued.

Microsoft strongly recommends moving to Windows 10 sometime before January 2020 to avoid a situation where you need no longer available service or support. Once an operating system inputs extended support, use is still very safe. This means Microsoft will keep patching any security threats, but will not add any new features (as it would do during the 'mainstream support' phase).

When you continue to use Windows 7 after support has ended, the PC will still function, but it will become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. Microsoft will continue to start and run your Computer, but software updates, including security updates, will no longer be provided by you.
